ABC to Launch TV Everywhere Streaming Video “Watch” App

ABC is already in the forefront of broadcast technology. They are the first network to sell episodes via iTunes as well as the first to offer free streaming videos on its website. Their upcoming “Watch” app would only confirm ABC’s lead over other networks in this particular oeuvre.

On Tuesday, the New York Times gave readers some details about a new app that Disney subsidiary ABC is preparing to launch. The app, known as a “Watch” app, would allow ABC subscribers to stream live video directly to their smartphone or iPad. Similar “Watch” apps are already available for ESPN and the Disney Channel.

Subscriber-only streaming video – called TV Everywhere – makes watching your favorite show possible anywhere you have Internet access. But ABC must move cautiously; because the shows would stream live, the network must consider pre-existing contracts with outside companies who produce some of its shows, as well as local stations that might not immediately be on board with the idea of streaming content.

Can’t wait for the ABC subscriber app to appear? Have no fear – ABC currently offers a free app called “ABC Player” that allows users to instantly watch full episodes of Once Upon a Time, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family, Happy Endings, and more…all for free!

There’s no information at this point whether content in ABC Player may change – or even still be available – after the new TV Everywhere (subscriber-only) app is released.

Are you looking forward to ABC’s new app? Have you used Disney’s other “Watch” apps? What did you think?
