Disney Awards $5,000 to Appalachian Bear Rescue

A $5,000 grant was given to the Appalachian Bear Rescue (ABR) from The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund (DWCF) in order to help assist ABR in feeding the record number of bear cubs staying with the organization this year.

Thus far, ABR has admitted 33 black bear cubs because of a shortage of food supplies in the Smokies and surrounding areas, leading to more orphaned cubs in 2011 than in previous years.

Jack Burgin, ABR Board President says:

We are grateful that the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund was able to help ABR care for the cubs orphaned due to the mast crop failure.

Kim Sams, Disney Director of Conservation Programs, also says that “[they] appreciate the extraordinary efforts by ABR, [and are] pleased to be part of helping the wildlife in the iconic Smokies.”
