Disney Becomes First Studio to Pass $1 Billion Domestically in 2012

This weekend, Disney reached an important milestone, as Walt Disney Studios became the first film studio this year to surpass $1 billion in domestic box office grosses. This achievement is largely in part due to the overwhelming success of The Avengers, which has grossed $611.1 million domestically so far.

With this milestone reached in just 188 days, Disney has set a new record for themselves, beating out 2010’s pace of 210 days to reach the $1 billion mark. This is the seventh year in a row that Disney has achieved this first place accomplishment. Disney was also the first to cross the $1 billion mark internationally for the 18th straight year.

In addition to the overwhelming success of The Avengers, Disney’s 2012 grosses were also helped by Disney/Pixar’s Brave, which has grossed almost $175 million thus far; John Carter, which, despite its disappointing box office performance, is the studio’s third highest grossing film of the year at $73 million domestically; and Beauty and the Beast inĀ 3-D with $47.6 million.
