Disney Confirms ‘Star Wars’ Episodes 8 and 9

star wars epsiode 7Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger recently confirmed that the next two Star Wars films – episodes 8 and 9 – will be released in the next few years.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in 10 months, and according to Iger’s statement in a shareholder report, Episode 8 will be released in 2017 with Episode 9 coming in 2019.

He also said Episode 9 will “finish the trilogy”, which hints at these three films being a stand-alone trilogy of sort.

Speaking of stand-alone films, the first “stand-alone” Star Wars film is coming to theater next year, but there’s no word yet on stars or what the film might be about. There is a rumor that Fantastic Four director Josh Trank is directing that film.

Iger has mentioned that this stand-alone film will be ‘based on’ characters from the Star Wars films but there’s no confirmation if he means the original films or characters that will be introduced in The Force Awakens.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens December 18, 2015.
