Disney, Others, Sue Hotfile For Infringing on Copyrights

Five major Hollywood studios are apparently joining together to sue the website Hotfile for copyright infringement, according to an article in the Orlando Sentinel.

Disney has joined with Twentieth Century Fox, Universal, Columbia Pictures, and Warner Brothers in bringing suit against the Panamanian-based company, saying that the site encourages users to upload and share copyrighted media, including TV shows and films.

Rather than peer-to-peer sharing, Hotfile uses the concept of “cyberlockers” in which content is “stored” for users.  To access the content uploaded by other users, subscribers must pay a monthly fee.

The practice of sharing copyrighted content, especially for a fee, is seen as eating into the profits of the studios.
