Disney to Produce Stage Adaptation of ‘Shakespeare in Love’

This has been an exciting week for Disney Theatrical Productions. Following an earlier announcement that Peter and the Starcatcher will be heading to Broadway in 2012, it has now been announced that Disney Theatricals, in partnership with Sonia Friedman Productions, will bring a new adaptation of the 1998 film Shakespeare in Love to the stage.

The original film Shakespeare in Love won seven Academy Awards in 1999, including the coveted title of Best Picture. Writing the play’s script will be Tony Award winner Tom Stoppard. Known as the author of such plays as The Coast of Utopia, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, and Arcadia, Stoppard also co-wrote the original screenplay of Shakespeare in Love, for which he won an Academy Award.

The new stage production is currently aiming for a run on London’s West End, as opposed to Broadway. No timetable has been announced for the production yet, but the play will feature direction by Jack O’Brien (Hairspray) and designs by Tony Award winner Bob Crowley (Mary Poppins, The Coast of Utopia). Stay tuned for more news on this exciting new adaptation.
