Disney’s Marvel and Netflix to Develop Live-Action Series Based on Marvel Characters

The Walt Disney Company and Netflix recently announced a deal to develop live-action series featuring four of Marvel’s most popular characters to be broadcast on the Netflix television network starting in 2015.

Marvel will develop four series programs and one mini-series that will feature all four of the Marvel characters.

The first series will focus on Daredevil – the blind superhero who was portrayed on film by Ben Affleck in 2003. Daredevil’s series will be followed by three more series featuring Jessica Jones (superhero turned private investigator), Iron Fist (a martial arts master), and Luke Cage (an indestructible man).

Each superhero series will include 13 episodes and will culminate in Marvel’s The Defenders mini-series event which will bring all four superheroes together.

“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty,” said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment in a press release. “This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

Last year Netflix and Disney inked a deal that made Netflix the exclusive U.S. subscription service for first-run, live-action, and animated film from the Walt Disney Studios. That deal includes titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature, and Lucasfilm.
