Last weekend, Disney fans at D23’s Destination D event at the Disneyland Hotel were treated to a one-of-a-kind concert by Disney Legend and composer Alan Menken. Included in the concert were several cut songs from Aladdin that were reinstated in the show’s stage production, and in introducing one of these songs, Menken made the announcement that the show is, in fact, coming to Broadway.
The stage production of Aladdin had its world premiere last summer at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre and has since been seen at the St. Louis Muny and the Tuacahn Amphitheatre in Utah, where it is currently playing. The show, which was developed by Disney Theatrical Productions and includes a number of cut songs that were originally penned for the film by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, was never intended to move to Broadway, and little has been speculated about the show’s Broadway ambitions since it premiered in Seattle, making Menken’s Destination D announcement all the more surprising. Nothing has been officially announced yet about the show’s transition to Broadway, with Disney Theatrical Productions declining to comment on the news.
While it is yet to be seen whether or not the show will, indeed, transfer to Broadway, audiences can currently see the stage production at the Tuacahn Amphitheatre in Utah’s Padre Canyon, where it is currently playing through October 19. The production, which is the first regional engagement of the recently revised and expanded show, promises “illusions, camels, magic flying carpets, giant water effects and a live interactive 3DS movie created specifically for this production.” For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.tuacahn.org.
