Mark your calendars! Walt Disney records will be releasing Mary Poppins: The Live Cast Recording on Tuesday, April 5th! The recording is from the stage musical Mary Poppins, and was recorded over five performances at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne.
According to reports, this latest recording has been polished, refined and changed since the best-selling 2005 London cast recording. One of the biggest changes? The inclusion of “Playing the Game,” a new song that first made its debut in the Broadway production but is now included in all worldwide productions.
Producers Cameron Mackintosh and Thomas Schumacher had this to say in the album’s notes:
“We knew on opening night that we had something special and we decided then and there to capture the magic with a live cast recording. This recording also gives us the chance to present listeners with a permanent record of the show as it has evolved since the Original London Cast recording from 2005. We have done so much work on the musical score since then, first on Broadway, then on the US Tour, and some final tweaks in rehearsal in Australia.”
Considering that Mary Poppins is one of the biggest stage musical successes to come from London or New York in many years, it makes sense to release a new live recording to capture the moment. To date, the six productions of the stage show have grossed over $521 million; entertained 7 million guests; and has collectively run for 11.5 years. Additionally, the musical has won 35 major theatre awards, including the Evening Standard, Tony and Olivier awards.
