Musical Adaptation of Disney’s ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ to Make Stage Debut This Fall

Fans of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame have likely never seen the musical stage version before, unless they happened to be in Germany more than a decade ago.

That will all change this fall when the musical stage version of the animated classic makes its US debut at the La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, California.

The 1996 animated film was based on the Victor Hugo novel and hand an Oscar-nominated score by Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz.

The stage version will again team Menken with Schwartz and has reportedly been in the works for some time. This new version features a book by Peter Parnell and will be directed by Scott Schwartz.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame will run October 28 through December 7 at the La Jolla Playhouse.

The stage version is being produced through a special arrangement with Disney. There is no word on whether or not Quasimodo and friends will be appearing on Broadway in the future.
