‘Oz’ Sequel Already in the Works

On the day that Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful makes its debut in theatres, word is already out that Disney is planning a sequel.

The studio has given the go ahead for writer Mitchell Kapner to begin fleshing out the next installment in the story. If following the progression of the books, that would indicate the next film would be based upon The Wonderful Wizard of Oz — the same L. Frank Baum tome that inspired the classic original film, The Wizard of Oz. Oz: The Great and Powerful is considered a prequel to the 1939 classic.

While Kapner is free to begin work based upon the book because it is considered a public domain work, he will not be permitted to use any of the additions that came about from the original Judy Garland film. An example would be the ruby slippers. Anything specific to the film is under copyright by the film’s owner, Warner Brothers.

Speculation indicates that a sequel could be released in the near future, as Disney looks to capitalize on the success of the current film.

What do you think of the possibility of a sequel which may mirror the classic film?  Leave a comment and let us know.
