Disney Animator and Imagineer Francis Xavier ‘X’ Atencio Dies at Age 98

Disney Legend Francis Xavier “X” Atencio passed away on September 10 at the age of 98.
X was a Disney Imagineer and animator who worked on iconic Disney attractions including Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean, in addition to animated films including Pinocchio and Fantasia.
He got a job at Disney in 1938 – after moving to Los Angeles to study at the Chouinard Art Institute. His first work was Pinocchio and after he was promoted to assistant animator for Fantasia.

Mickey’s of Glendale to Feature Disney Parks Merchandise at D23 Expo

Fans attending this weekend’s D23 Expo will have a chance to visit a pop-up shop from Mickey’s of Glendale.
The store, Mickey’s of Glendale, is normally only open to Disney Imagineers and cast members, but the pop-up shop will be open to everyone and will feature an assortment of Disney Parks-inspired merchandise.
The pop-up’s merchandise includes camp shirts featuring artwork and patterns created with the symbols of Adventureland and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Other items include apparel honoring the 30th anniversary of Star Tours and more.

‘Avatar’ Creators James Cameron and Jon Landau to Join D23: Destination D Panel

D23: Destination D: Amazing Adventures takes place November 19-20 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort and two big names have been added to the presenter list.
Avatar creators James Cameron and Jon Landau will be joining Imagineer Joe Rohde for the Pandora – The World of AVATAR presentation. This presentation will focus on the 12-acre land that is currently being built at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
D23: Destination D will also feature a conversation with Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, plus a sneak peek of Moana from screenwriter Jared Bush.

KaBOOM! Play Together Tour Powered by Disney Parks Traveling to Six Cities Across America

The KaBOOM! Play Together Tour powered by Disney Parks kicks off August 16 in Anaheim. The tour will travel to six cities around America.
The Play Together Tour is a free event and it features an obstacle course designed by Disney Imagineers. Families can design their team flags and participate in games and team building stations while solving puzzles and playing together.

The fall issues of Disney twenty-three magazine marks the 23rd issue for the publication.
This issue will take readers around the globe to experience Disney in Europe, South America, and Asia. The magazine’s cover photo is a mosaic featuring Walt and Roy O. Disney with Margie Gay of the Alice Comedies short series.

July 2014 Merchandise Events Announced for Disneyland Resort

Summer is now in full swing at the Disney Parks, and guests at Disneyland can take part in several special merchandise events in July.
The weekend of July 12 is especially busy at Disneyland with four different events planned.
There is a special artist showcase with Walt Disney Imagineers Stephen Cargile, Larry Nikolia, and Mark Page in addition to former Imagineers Maggie Parr and George Scribner from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Disneyana in Disneyland Park.

More Special Guests Announced for D23 Destination D: Attraction Rewind

D23 has announced more special guests for D23 Destination D: Attraction Rewind.
The roster includes Disney Legends, Imagineers, and others who are coming together to celebrate fan favorites including Adventure Thru Inner Space, If You Had Wings, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
The event includes more than a dozen panels and presentations in addition to a special exhibit from the Walt Disney Archives, Pleasure Island: Rewind, and a pop-up shop from Mickey’s of Glendale, the Walt Disney Imagineering store.

Disney Legend Tony Baxter Honored with a Window on Disneyland’s Main Street U.S.A.

Disney Legend Tony Baxter was honored for his contributions with a window on Main Street U.S.A . at Disneyland last week.
The window unveiling ceremony was hosted by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs, Walt Disney Imagineering Chief Creative Executive Bruce Vaughn, and Disneyland Resort President Michael Colglazier. Friends, family, and other Disney Legends were also on hand for the ceremony.

Festival of the Masters Showcases Unique Works of Art in Downtown Disney

Downtown Disney will soon be transformed into a showcase of art, photography, sculpture, and more at the 38th annual Festival of the Masters presented by Michaels.
The open-air festival features more than 300 artists who will be showcasing their works in photography, painting, sculpture, chalk, and glass. The exhibits include more than 130 award-winning artists and 20 up-and-coming Emerging Masters, the Disney Artist Village, and live performance artists.

Want to Be an Imagineer? Check Out Savannah College of Art and Design

Disney fans often wonder how they might career track to the magic.  In other words, how does one become an Imagineer?
Well, that career path just became a little easier, thanks to Savannah College of Art and Design.
The college, which is primarily located in Savannah, Georgia (but also has campuses in Atlanta, Hong Kong, and Lacoste, France), began offering its master in fine arts degree in themed entertainment design this fall.  The degree is the first of its kind in the U.S., and counts many former Imagineers among its faculty.
