‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ to Move Off-Broadway This March

A few months ago, we let you know the disappointing news that Peter and the Starcatcher will be closing on Broadway later this month. However, this tremendous production will live on past its closing date. This week, the play’s producers announced the exciting news that the show will be opening off-Broadway this spring.

‘Newsies’ on Broadway Recoups Initial Investment

Since it opened on Broadway this past spring, Newsies has proved to be one of Broadway’s most popular shows. The musical’s popularity paid off this week, when it was announced that the show has completely recouped its investment.
Newsies opened this past March on Broadway, following a prior run at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. This means that the show was able to recoup its entire $5 million investment in just nine months, marking the fastest a Disney production has ever been able to turn a profit.

New ‘Lion King’ Exhibit On Display in New York City Through December 16

If you’ve seen a production of The Lion King on stage, you’ve likely been impressed by the awe-inspiring design of the show, from the hand-crafted masks and puppets to the gorgeous set design. Now, Disney has given Disney and theatre fans the chance to see these amazing designs closer than ever before to celebrate The Lion King‘s 15th anniversary on Broadway. From now through December 16th, guests can visit a special pop-up exhibit that celebrates Julie Taymor’s stunning designs for the stage production of The Lion King.

Disney Theatricals Cancels Broadway Performances Due to Hurricane Sandy

Those of us on the East Coast are gearing up for Hurricane Sandy and its effects over the next few days, and in preparation for the storm, Disney Theatrical Productions has canceled several performances of its Broadway productions.
The October 28-29 performances of Newsies, Mary Poppins, and The Lion King will be officially canceled, Disney Theatricals announced this afternoon. The dates/times of the canceled performances are as follows:
Mary Poppins: October 28th at 6:30 PM (New Amsterdam Theater)
The Lion King: October 28th at 6:30 PM (Minskoff Theater)

‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ to Close on Broadway January 20

This week, producers announced the sad news that the Tony Award winning play Peter and the Starcatcher‘s Broadway run will soon be coming to an end. The magical show will officially close on Broadway January 20, 2013.

Is ‘Aladdin’ Coming to Broadway?

Last weekend, Disney fans at D23’s Destination D event at the Disneyland Hotel were treated to a one-of-a-kind concert by Disney Legend and composer Alan Menken. Included in the concert were several cut songs from Aladdin that were reinstated in the show’s stage production, and in introducing one of these songs, Menken made the announcement that the show is, in fact, coming to Broadway.

‘The Lion King’ Becomes Fifth Longest Running Broadway Show of All Time

This week, the Broadway production of The Lion King achieved a major milestone, as it surpassed A Chorus Line to become the fifth longest running Broadway show of all time.
The musical reached this milestone following its matinee performance on Wednesday, August 15, which was its 6,138th performance. ‘Newsies’ Star Jeremy Jordan Lands Role in NBC’s ‘Smash’

‘Newsies’ and ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ Earn Seven Tony Awards

Last night, the Broadway community came together to honor some of this season’s greatest Broadway shows, performers, and creators at the 2012 Tony Awards. And while Clybourne Park and Once may have taken home the top honors of Best Play and Best Musical, respectively, the Disney shows Newsies and Peter and the Starcatcher did not come home empty-handed. ‘Newsies’ Broadway Run is Now Open-Ended

Ever since Newsies made its debut on Broadway in March, the show has become a complete success, earning eight Tony nominations and becoming a box office smash.
