Disney Theatrical Tests New Muppet Stage Show

The Muppets may have already hit Broadway on screen in their classic film The Muppets Take Manhattan, but this week, it was announced that the Muppets’ real-life Broadway debut may not be too far away. Disney Theatrical Productions recently held a 15-minute showcase featuring the Muppets to test the feasibility of a stage show featuring the iconic group.

‘Newsies’ Celebrates One Year on Broadway

This week brought another big milestone for Disney on Broadway and its hit show Newsies, which celebrated its one year anniversary yesterday, March 29.
Newsies, which features music by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, a book by Harvey Fierstein, and direction by Jeff Calhoun, officially opened on Broadway March 29, 2012. ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ to Move Off-Broadway This March

A few months ago, we let you know the disappointing news that Peter and the Starcatcher will be closing on Broadway later this month. However, this tremendous production will live on past its closing date. This week, the play’s producers announced the exciting news that the show will be opening off-Broadway this spring.

‘Newsies’ on Broadway Recoups Initial Investment

Since it opened on Broadway this past spring, Newsies has proved to be one of Broadway’s most popular shows. The musical’s popularity paid off this week, when it was announced that the show has completely recouped its investment.
Newsies opened this past March on Broadway, following a prior run at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. This means that the show was able to recoup its entire $5 million investment in just nine months, marking the fastest a Disney production has ever been able to turn a profit.

If you’ve seen a production of The Lion King on stage, you’ve likely been impressed by the awe-inspiring design of the show, from the hand-crafted masks and puppets to the gorgeous set design. Disney Theatricals Cancels Broadway Performances Due to Hurricane Sandy

Those of us on the East Coast are gearing up for Hurricane Sandy and its effects over the next few days, and in preparation for the storm, Disney Theatrical Productions has canceled several performances of its Broadway productions.
The October 28-29 performances of Newsies, Mary Poppins, and The Lion King will be officially canceled, Disney Theatricals announced this afternoon. The dates/times of the canceled performances are as follows:
Mary Poppins: October 28th at 6:30 PM (New Amsterdam Theater)

‘The Lion King’ Becomes Highest-Grossing Broadway Show in History

Although The Phantom of the Opera still reins as the longest-running show in Broadway history, The Lion King took an important honor from the popular show this week. On Monday, it was announced that the show has surpassed Phantom to become the highest-grossing show in Broadway history.
The Lion King earned this honor with a total cumulative gross of $853,846,062, as compared to Phantom‘s previously record-holding gross of $853,122,847. While Phantom has been running on Broadway for ten years longer than The Lion King–the former opened in 1988, while Lion King opened in …

Full Cast Announced for Broadway Run of ‘Newsies’

We’re just a few short months from the Broadway opening of Newsies, and recently, Disney Theatrical Productions announced the full cast of talented performers that will be seen in the show. Many of the cast will be reprising their roles, after originally performing them in the show’s premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse last fall.
