The Week in Disney News: Hurricane Irma Impacts on Disney World, Holiday Events Announced, and More

Happy Sunday! We’re back with another recap of the week’s biggest Disney news stories!
Last Sunday Hurricane Irma meant the closure of the Walt Disney World Resort for two days. The theme parks reopened on September 12 with mostly minimal damage.
The Walt Disney Company announced a $2.5 million donation to the relief efforts following Hurricane Irma.
In non-hurricane news, J.J. Abrams was announced as the writer and director for Star Wars: Episode IX.
An extended sneak preview of Disney/Pixar’s Coco is coming to the Disney Parks in November.

J.J. Abrams Tapped to Write and Direct ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

J.J. Abrams, the writer and director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been tapped to finish the latest trilogy, writing and directing Star Wars: Episode IX.
Last week it was announced that Lucasfilm and then-Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow had parted ways.
Trevorrow’s departure was the second high profile departure from a Star Wars film this summer. Earlier this summer Ron Howard took over the stand-alone Han Solo film from Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

New Trailer Released for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

The latest trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released this week as part of the Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim.
In the trailer fans hear the voice of Luke Skywalker and it’s the speech he gave to Leia in Return of the Jedi. The image on the screen is that of Darth Vader’s burned out and partially melted mask.
But the addition of the line “And you have the power too” leaves fans wondering: who is Luke talking to?

First Teaser Trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to Play in 30 Theaters Starting November 28

You might have noticed a great disturbance in The Force this week as millions of voices (in select cities) cried out in joy when they realized they will get to see an 88-second teaser trailer for Star Wars – The Force Awakens.
Starting Friday, November 28 this very short – but much anticipated – trailer will play in 30 theaters around the country.

‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ to Be Directed by Rian Johnson

The next Star Wars film, Episode VIII, will be directed by Rian Johnson, best-known for directing films including Looper and several memorable episodes of Breaking Bad.
Johnson will also write the script for Star Wars: Episode VIII according to several sources. Ram Bergman will be part of the production team for Episode VIII.
Deadline is also reporting that Johnson will direct Episode IX, but other sources say that’s merely a rumor, although it is likely he will give his input into the story for the final episode of the new trilogy.

Academy Award Winner Lupita Nyong’o Joins Cast of ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’

There is more casting news surrounding the production of Star Wars: Episode VII.
Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) has been added to the cast. Gwendoline Christie, who currently stars at Brienne of Tarth on Game of Thrones has also been cast in the film.

‘Star Wars’ Fans Have a Chance to be In ‘Star Wars Episode VII’ through Force For Change Campaign

If you have ever wanted to be part of the cast of a Star Wars movie, now might be your chance.
Star Wars Episode VII director J.J. Abrams recently announced the creation of Star Wars: Force for Change, a brand new initiative from Disney and Lucasfilm in collaboration with Bad Robot that is dedicated to finding creative solutions to some of the world’s problems.
The first Force for Change campaign is raising funds and awareness for the United Nation’s Chidlren’s Fund (UNICEF) Innovation Labs.

‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ to be Released in Theaters December 18, 2015

JJ Abrams Officially Signed On As Director of ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’

A few days ago, we let you know that it was reported that J.J. Abrams has signed on to be the director of the next installment in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: Episode VII. Now, Disney and Lucasfilm have officially confirmed that Abrams will serve as director, as well as a producer, on the highly-anticipated film.
