This Week in Disney News – ‘Frozen 2′, Pirates of the Caribbean Closure, and a New Name for Disney’s Hollywood Studios

It’s been a whirlwind of big Disney news this week so let’s dive right in!
Disney announced the official kickoff for summer is happening May 22 on both coasts! The Magic Kingdom is hosting a 24-hour event during Memorial Day weekend to start the “Coolest Summer Ever.”
The ‘Coolest Summer Ever’ will include Frozen Summer Fun LIVE at Disney’s Hollywood Studios from June 17 through September 7, Star Wars Weekends from May 15 through June 14, plus the opening of several new restaurants and shops at Downtown Disney.

Pirates of the Caribbean Closing for Lengthy Refurbishment on May 11

The very popular Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the Magic Kingdom is closing in May for a lengthy refurbishment.
The ride will be closed from May 11 until September 25 so that it can undergo what Disney is calling a “routine refurbishment.”
There have been reports lately of issues with the ride’s animatronic characters and with boats taking on water during the ride.
Last year a guest was seriously injured and lost his fingertips on the ride and a young boy also suffered a hand injury in a separate incident.

New ‘Show Your Disney Side’ App Lets You Transform Into Disney Characters

If you have ever wondered what you’d look like as Maleficent, there’s an app for that.
Disney has introduced the Show Your Disney Side app that allows users to transform themselves into popular Disney characters including an X-Wing Pilot from Star Tours – The Adventure Continues, a pirate from Pirates of the Caribbean, Anna from Frozen, and even Maleficent.
Guests who use the new app at Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World Resort can use the app to unlock special Haunted Mansion characters.

New Merchandise Set to Debut at Disney Parks Throughout 2015

We recently told you about the new 2015 dated merchandise that has debuted at the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. And now we have more merchandise news to share.
As the renovations and construction continues at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, a new tiki figure will be available for guests this year. The mini-figure was inspired by the tiki that guests will find inside the newly-renovated Great Ceremonial House.

Details Announced for Pirates of the Caribbean Attraction and Pirate-Themed Land at Shanghai Disneyland

Captain Jack Sparrow is headed to Shanghai Disneyland.
At the March 18 annual meeting of shareholders for The Walt Disney Company, Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced plans for the first-ever Pirates-themed land at a Disney Park and a Pirates of the Caribbean attraction for the Shanghai Disney Resort.

Hollywood Producer Jerry Bruckheimer to Appear at a Book Signing at Disneyland Park

Fans of award-winning producer Jerry Bruckheimer have a chance to meet him at a special book signing at the Disneyland Park on December 14.
Bruckheimer will be signing copies of the new book Jerry Bruckheimer: When Lightning Strikes | Four Decades of Filmmaking by Michael Singer. The coffee table book showcases 40 years of Bruckheimer’s career in movies and television including his work hit movies such as Beverly Hills Cop, Armageddon, and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

The Walt Disney Company and Jerry Bruckheimer Part Ways, Ending a 20 Year Partnership

Last week the Walt Disney Company announced that after more than two decades of working together it was severing ties with producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
The news comes a few months after the more-than-dismal and very costly theatrical release of The Lone Ranger, which Bruckheimer produced. The poor box office receipts from that film will likely cost Disney nearly $190 million.
The separation also came about a week after Disney announced that the fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was put on hold.

Disney XD Transforming Into Disney Fandom with Three Nights of Special Programming

Disney fans who love Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and other Disney movies are going to want to tune in to Disney XD beginning July 30 when the network transforms itself into Disney Fandom.

Author Sues Disney for a Second Time Citing Copyright Infringement Related to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Films

Royce Matthew, a Florida-based author, recently filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company alleging that the company took and used his work and ideas in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.
This is the second time Matthew has sued Disney with regard to the Pirates film series.
Matthew first filed a lawsuit against Disney in 2005 after he viewed the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. During the discovery process of that lawsuit he reportedly provided evidence that his work – the low-budget film Supernatural Pirates – was …

A Pirate’s Adventure: Treasures of the Seven Seas, the interactive game that was inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean films has set sail at the Magic Kingdom.
The game takes guests – who are Captain Jack Sparrow’s newest recruits – on a quest to save Adventureland, while trying to find the Treasures of the Seven Seas and fight off enemies including the Royal Navy, Captain Barbossa, and other pirates.
