Disney Starts Production on Animated TV Series and Movie Inspired by ‘The Lion King’

Disney has started production on an animated television series and movie inspired by The Lion King.
The Lion Guard continues the story that was introduced in The Lion King 20 years ago. The television movie will premiere in the fall of 2015 and the series will debut in early 2016 on Disney Junior and Disney Channel.

Harambe Nights Merchandise Arrives at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in June

Harambe Nights, the special Lion King-themed event, begins at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on June 7 and Disney is releasing special merchandise for the event.
Disney Pin collectors will have a chance to pick up a special Lion King mystery pin set that features 10 puzzle pins and two chaser pins. There is a 900 edition size for the puzzle pins and a 600 edition size for the chasers.

Harambe Nights Experience Coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Includes Live Performance and Special Dining Experience

This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Lion King and Disney’s Animal Kingdom is celebrating with a  new hard-ticket event.
The events, ‘Harambe Nights,’ is the first-ever ticketed special event at the park and it includes a Welcome Reception with appetizers and beverages, a performance of The Lion King – Concert in the Wild with celebrity narrators, and the Harambe Nights Street Party.

‘Frozen’ Glides past the $500 Million Mark at the Box Office

Disney’s animated hit Frozen broke the $500 million mark at the box office before the end of 2013, making it the fourth Disney film to reach that milestone last year.
The movie opened Thanksgiving weekend in the United States and has earned a hefty $250 million at the domestic box office since then. The other $250 million has come from the international box office. That means the $500 million box office total was earned in just six weeks.

Disney Developing ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Sequel

Sources are reporting that Disney is currently developing a sequel to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which earned over $1 billion worldwide for the studio.
Disney hired award-winning screenwriter Linda Woolverton to pen the sequel’s script. Woolverton has worked on several Disney films in the past, including the first Alice as well as Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and the forthcoming Maleficent.
So far, the studio is keeping plot details for the planned sequel under wraps, but we’ll let you know more as soon as new information becomes available.

New ‘Lion King’ Exhibit On Display in New York City Through December 16

If you’ve seen a production of The Lion King on stage, you’ve likely been impressed by the awe-inspiring design of the show, from the hand-crafted masks and puppets to the gorgeous set design. Now, Disney has given Disney and theatre fans the chance to see these amazing designs closer than ever before to celebrate The Lion King‘s 15th anniversary on Broadway. Disney Legend Mel Shaw Passes Away at 97

Dubbed a “Disney Legend” in 2004, visual animator, story man and development artist Mel Shaw passed away at 97.
Personally recruited by Walt Disney himself, Shaw contributed to several early classic Disney films including Fantasia, Bambi and The Wind in the Willows. His career with Disney was put on hold during the second World War, where he served as a filmmaker and cartoonist. After the war, he returned to work for Disney offering invaluable knowledge and expertise during the making of The Rescuers, The Fox and the Hound, The Great Mouse Detective, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

Disney and USO Provide Entertainment for Sandy Relief Workers

In a partnership with the USO, Disney Theatrical Group recently arranged for a little entertainment for service workers in New York City to aide with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. The move is part of Disney’s continued efforts to support victims of the storm, which swept through the northeast United States in late October, bringing widespread devastation.

Disney Theatricals Cancels Broadway Performances Due to Hurricane Sandy

Those of us on the East Coast are gearing up for Hurricane Sandy and its effects over the next few days, and in preparation for the storm, Disney Theatrical Productions has canceled several performances of its Broadway productions.
The October 28-29 performances of Newsies, Mary Poppins, and The Lion King will be officially canceled, Disney Theatricals announced this afternoon. The dates/times of the canceled performances are as follows:
Mary Poppins: October 28th at 6:30 PM (New Amsterdam Theater)

Alton Fitzgerald White to Release ‘Disney My Way’ in October

Alton Fitzgerald White, who plays Mufasa in Broadway’s The Lion King, will be releasing his second solo album next month: Disney My Way.
The album will feature popular Disney tunes from such classic films as Mary Poppins, The Lion King, Aladdin and many more. Additionally, the album features a 12-piece orchestra with arrangements by Jim Abbot. The track list includes:
