‘Newsies’ and ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ Earn Seven Tony Awards

Last night, the Broadway community came together to honor some of this season’s greatest Broadway shows, performers, and creators at the 2012 Tony Awards. And while Clybourne Park and Once may have taken home the top honors of Best Play and Best Musical, respectively, the Disney shows Newsies and Peter and the Starcatcher did not come home empty-handed. The two shows earned a combined total of seven awards, including Best Score and Best Featured Actor in a Play.

Disney to Create Film Adaptation of ‘Peter and the Starcatchers’

Disney has hired Jesse Wigutow to adapt a screenplay for the best-selling children’s novel Peter and the Starcatchers, according to sources. The novel was also the inspiration for the current Broadway play Peter and the Starcatcher, which has garnered nine Tony award nominations.
The novel, co-authored by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, introduces us to the back story of the beloved character Peter Pan. It’s the first in a series of books by the authors.
Wigutow’s current work includes the film adaptation for Osterman Weekend, which is currently in development.

Disney Earns 17 Tony Award Nominations for ‘Newsies’ and ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’

Each year, the Tony Awards celebrate Broadway and the theatre, honoring the season’s top shows, creative teams, and performers in a nationally broadcast awards ceremony. This week, the nominees for the 2012 Tony Awards were announced, and this year’s Disney-produced shows were not forgotten. Newsies and Peter and the Starcatcher earned a combined total of 17 nominations, including nominations in the top honors of Best Play and Best Musical.

The Lion King Run Extended to December 2011 in Las Vegas

Looks like Simba and Friends will be entertaining the crowds in Las Vegas for a while longer.  The Las Vegas run of the Disney’s Broadway hit The Lion King has been extended by 14 months.  Close date for the show is now set for December 30, 2011.
The show, which debuted at Mandalay Bay Theatre in May 2009, will have played for a record 31 months, with well over 1,000 performances at the end of its run.  This marks the longest run of the show in any American city, with the …
