This Week in Disney News – ‘Frozen 2’, Pirates of the Caribbean Closure, and a New Name for Disney’s Hollywood Studios

coolest summer everIt’s been a whirlwind of big Disney news this week so let’s dive right in!

Disney announced the official kickoff for summer is happening May 22 on both coasts! The Magic Kingdom is hosting a 24-hour event during Memorial Day weekend to start the “Coolest Summer Ever.”

The ‘Coolest Summer Ever’ will include Frozen Summer Fun LIVE at Disney’s Hollywood Studios from June 17 through September 7, Star Wars Weekends from May 15 through June 14, plus the opening of several new restaurants and shops at Downtown Disney.

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure is also celebrating the start of summer with a 24-hour party that kicks off the Diamond Anniversary celebration!

One attraction that won’t be part of the ‘Coolest Summer Ever’ at Disney World is Pirates of the Caribbean. This popular attraction is closing down May 11 for a lengthy refurbishment. The ride is scheduled to reopen in September.

In other Magic Kingdom news, there was a bit of a switcheroo this week at the park. Aloha Isle – home of the Dole Whip – and Sunshine Tree Terrace – home of the Citrus Swirl – switched locations!

Speaking of switching things up – Bob Iger “accidentally” announced during this week’s shareholder meeting that Disney is planning on changing the name of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. There’s no word yet as to what the park might be called next, but this will be the third name for the park in its 26 year history. The last name change happened in 2008 when it went from Disney-MGM Studios to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Raise your hand if you still call it Disney-MGM Studios!

And finally, we just can’t Let It Go. Disney also announced this week that Frozen 2 is in the works, bringing back the Oscar-winning team again. There’s no word yet on when Anna, Elsa, and the rest of the Frozen group will be back on the big screen but don’t forget you can catch the all-new short Frozen Fever in theaters now alongside the live-action Cinderella.
