‘Thor: The Dark World’ Dominates at Box Office and The Walt Disney Studios Reach All-Time Global Box Office High

For the second weekend in a row, Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World topped the box office bringing in nearly $40 million.

The film – which cost $170 million to make – has earned $147 million at the domestic box office so far. Internationally the sequel has grossed $332.9 million, and $470.8 million worldwide. Marvel’s Thor earned $181 million domestically and $449 million worldwide.

At its current pace, the film should easily earn more than $700 million worldwide.

Thanks in part to this film’s success The Walt Disney Studios reached a new all-time global box office high this week, going over the $3.791 billion mark the studio achieved in 2010.

The studio is the first movie studio to reach $1 billion domestically this year, and has also reached $2 billion internationally faster than ever before. The overseas debut of Thor: The Dark World broke the studio’s international box office record of $2.302 billion.

And the holiday film season is just starting for The Walt Disney Studios – upcoming films include DreamWorks Pictures’ Delivery Man on November 22, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen on November 27, and Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks on December 20.
