Walt Disney World Resort Donating Mattresses to Central Florida Nonprofit for Recycling

recycling at resortsThe Walt Disney World Resort is donating old mattresses and box springs to Central Florida nonprofit which is in turn recycling the items.

The Mustard Seed of Central Florida received 50 mattresses and box springs from one of Disney’s All-Star Resorts this summer and the recycling effort is creating jobs for the nonprofit’s clients.

“Since receiving these donations from Walt Disney World Resort, we have been able to hire more employees and provide job training services to help those less skilled,” said Kathy Baldwin, executive director of The Mustard Seed of Central Florida.”

The nonprofit helps families by collecting donated furniture and other household items and then granting them to pre-qualified families who are rebuilding or reestablishing their home after a crisis.

The mattress recycling program is also benefiting local landfills as mattresses and box springs are not degradable and therefore take up space in landfills. By recycling the items 23 cubic feet of landfill is saved.

Disney’s mattress and box spring recycling program will eventually distribute 5,000 mattresses and box spring sets to The Mustard Seed.
