Disney Announces 2016 Slate of Films

moanaThe Walt Disney Studios has announced its 2016 slate of films and fans can look forward to several animated features, a Star Wars prequel, and an Alice in Wonderland sequel.

There are 13 films in the 2016 slate including several expected blockbusters and a few possible sleeper hits.

The first film is The Finest Hours starring Chris Pine and it opens January 29. The film tells the story of a Coast Guard rescue and is based on real events.

Fans will then have to wait until spring for the next films from Disney. On April 15 the live-action Jungle Book swings into theaters. The film stars Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Bill Murray at Baloo, and Lupita Nyong’o as Raksha.

On May 16 Captain America: Civil War pits The Avengers against each other with Captain America and Iron Man squaring off. May 27 is the premiere of Alice Through the Looking Glass starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.

Just keep swimming until Finding Dory arrives on June 17. On July 1 fans can check out The BFG directed by Steven Spielberg.

A live-action version of Pete’s Dragon starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Wes Bentley debuts on August 12. Queen of Katwe starring Luptia Nyong’o opens in the fall and tells the story of a girl who is a chess whiz.

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the title role in Doctor Strange when the film opens November 4.

Disney and Pixar’s highly-anticipated film Moana arrives in theaters on November 23, just in time for the holiday season.

And finally, Star Wars fans will be able to check out the prequel Rouge One from director Gareth Edwards when it opens on December 16.
