Disney Parks Honored for a Commitment to Guests with Food Allergies

Since the phone call 12 years ago that a Disneyland Resort chef received from a mother concerned about gluten-free options for her child, Disney parks have been a leader in the food industry for those suffering from food allergies or with other dietary concerns.

Over the years, Disney has developed a very extensive program offering guests with food allergies and other dietary preferences meals that suit their needs at restaurants in both Anaheim and Orlando.

In fact, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts were even honored earlier this year as a leader for its commitment to food-allergy awareness by the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network.

Julia Bradsher, the network’s chief executive officer, said:

They have the most extensive program that we are aware of. They’ve been doing this for quite some time, so I think they were ahead of the curve.

Because theme parks vary in what menu options are available to guests, it’s easy to see that Disney is a leader in this industry. For example, Knott’s Berry Farm in California doesn’t offer this type of program, according to Jennifer Blazey, a spokeswoman for the theme park. But Disney does, and making special dietary requests is now easier than ever.

If a visitor to a Disney park is concerned about their food options, Disneyland Resort has recently set up a web page with all of the information one would need to make an informed decision about where they can find food in the parks that suit their needs. A special hotline number has been set up to take requests, as the company asks park guests to call ahead with their specific food requests. That number is 714-781-DINE.  If you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World and would like to call ahead to discuss special dietary needs, guests may call 407-824-5967.

Certified executive chef Bill Orton says that “the resort helps thousands of visitors [with their dietary needs,] and most needs are handled on the spot.”
