Disney Planning Lighthouse Sculpture in Honor of Toddler Killed by Alligator Last Year

grand floridian gator-001A year ago today 2-year-old Lane Graves was killed by an alligator at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Yesterday Disney announced plans to erect a lighthouse sculpture in his honor later this year.

The lighthouse – a symbol of the Lane Thomas Foundation – will be placed at an undisclosed location at the Walt Disney World Resort.

In a statement, George A. Kalogridis, president of Walt Disney World Resort said, ““To provide continued awareness of the foundation and its mission, we’ve commissioned an original sculpture of the lighthouse the foundation uses as a symbol of love and hope, to be installed on our property this summer.”

The alligator attack happened on the shores of the Seven Seas Lagoon at dusk on June 14, 2016. Lane was pulled into the water by the gator and his body was found the next day.

Since the attack Disney has added warning signs near waterways and have built stone walls on the shores of many of the resort’s lakes and waterways.

Lane’s family created the Lane Thomas Foundation to “serve as a beacon of hope” for families in crisis.
