Johnny Depp Reportedly In Talks for ‘Into the Woods’ Film

Disney fans may know Johnny Depp best for his role as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, or even as Tonto in the upcoming film The Lone Ranger. However, it looks like Depp may soon be adding another Disney film to his resume, as it was reported this week that Depp is in talks to join the cast of the upcoming film adaptation of Into the Woods.

Variety announced this week that Depp is in talks with Disney to join the cast of the film, which may also include Meryl Streep as The Witch. There is no word yet on which role in the musical Depp is in talks to portray.

Into the Woods tells the story of a childless baker and his wife, whose quest to lift a curse brings them together with many beloved fairy tale characters. Eventually, the characters discover that their “happy ever afters” may not actually be quite so happy after all. Originally a musical that debuted on Broadway in 1987, Into the Woods features a book by James Lapine and music by Stephen Sondheim. If Depp does appear in Into the Woods, this will mark his second adaptation of a Sondheim musical; Depp also portrayed the title character in the 2007 adaptation of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd.

Disney’s Into the Woods film will feature a screenplay by Lapine and direction by Rob Marshall (ChicagoNine). Stay tuned for more news on this exciting new adaptation.
