The Walt Disney Studios Reaches $7 Billion Global Box Office

Walt Disney StudiosThe Walt Disney Studios reached the $7 billion mark at the global box office today, thanks in part to the record opening weekend of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The $7 billion threshold is a new industry record.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story made $290 million in its global debut last weekend. The Studios earned $2.7 billion domestically and nearly $4.3 billion internationally, which is a record for Disney.

This year’s record-breaking global box office was due to the success of films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm. This year was also the first year that all five brands released films in the same calendar year.

Some of the biggest hits this year include: Captain America: Civil War ($1.15 billion globally), Finding Dory ($1.028 billion), Zootopia ($1.024 billion globally), The Jungle Book ($966.6 million globally), Doctor Strange ($652.8 million globally to date), and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($290 million globally in just five days).

Five of the top 10 films this year are Disney films – globally, domestically, and internationally – and three of those films topped $1 billion. Four of the films opened with more than $100 million at the box office, and thanks to Captain America: Civil War’s $179.1 million opening Disney holds five of the top six domestic openings – ever.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015 release) and Moana have also contributed to the record box office year for Disney.
