Armie Hammer to Play Title Role in Disney’s ‘The Lone Ranger’

Although Johnny Depp has long been attached to Disney’s upcoming film, The Lone Ranger, as the hero’s trusty sidekick, Tonto, the titular role had never been cast – until now.  Variety is reporting that Armie Hammer, fresh off his dual role as the Winklevoss twins in last year’s hit The Social Network, will play the masked Do-Gooder.

The Lone Ranger will reunite the Pirates of the Caribbean dream team of Depp, executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and director Gore Verbinski.  Though no official timeline has been release by Disney, shooting is expected to begin on the film once Depp completes his role in the upcoming remake of the classic Gothic television show Dark Shadows, and Hammer finishes filming The Brothers Grimm:  Snow White, Relativity Media’s adaptation of the classic fairytale.  The Lone Ranger could hit theaters as early as fall 2012.
