New Details Emerge About Disney California Adventure Expansion

Disney California Adventure has been in the process of a five-year, $1 billion dollar renovation, and new details have emerged about the expansion.

During a presentation last week that took place as part of a State of the Resort event at Disneyland Resort, Disney creators revealed exciting news about upcoming attractions to the 400 people who were in attendance.

Some of the projects that are currently under construction include:

  • Buena Vista Street, the entrance corridor of Disney California Adventure, will have several new shops and venues added that are designed to reflect the California that Walt Disney saw in the 1920’s and 30’s. One of the stores that will be added, Oswalds’s Filling Station, commemorates Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a character that was the precursor to Mickey Mouse.
  • Another store, Los Feliz Five and Dime, will be added. The store takes its name from the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, where Walt Disney lived when he first came to California.
  • The Carthay Circle Theater is currently under construction, and will feature prominently in the entrance to the park.

Additional projects currently under construction include Cars Land, which will be themed around the feature film Cars 2, opening next year. Cars Land will include the Radiator Springs Racers Ride, which will take up about half of the land slated for this new area. The ride, which will last 5 1/2 minutes, will take guests through various scenes based on the movie franchise and culminate in an exciting side-by-side race. A Curio Shop will also be added to this area, which sources say was inspired by trading posts creators saw during a road trip down Route 66.

Finally, The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, slated to open June 3, will offer guests a thrilling 5 1/2 minute ride that includes scenes showcasing 183 characters. Additional construction features include Ariel’s six sisters carved on the archway entrance, and the Triton Statue sitting atop the building.

As of this writing, the California Adventure Expansion is scheduled to be completed sometime next year.
