Disney Named a Recipient of 2015 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award

The Department of Defense announced at the end of June that Disney was one of 15 recipients of the 2015 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
This award is the highest recognition from the Department of Defense to employers that support National Guard Reserve employees.
Disney, along with the other recipients, will be honored at a ceremony on August 21 at the Pentagon.
Nominations for the Freedom Award are made by employees and this year there were 2,960 nominations that were submitted by guardsman and reservists. Since the inception of the award …

Disney VoluntEARS Build Playground for Veterans’ Families

Disney VoluntEARS – including Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger – worked to transform an empty lot into a new play area for veterans’ families.
The 140 Disney VoluntEARS worked alongside volunteers from Habitat for Humanity, Heroes Work Here veterans, Golden Oak Ranch staff members, local Santa Calrita, California residents, and organizers from KaBOOM! to build the playground on a campus that is home to veterans’ families.
The design of the playground was based on drawings from kids in the community and the drawings were inspired by their favorite ways to play.

It’s that time again – time for our weekly Disney news recap. There was a lot of good news coming out of Disney this week, so let’s dig in!

Disney Announces New Scholarship Program in Partnership with Student Veterans of America

Disney is continuing their work with the Heroes Work Here initiative with an  announcement of a new scholarship program.
Through a partnership with Student Veterans of America (SVA), Disney announced that Heroes Work Here is awarding three $10,000 scholarships to student veterans who are pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (also known as STEM).
In addition to the scholarship money, recipients will also be guaranteed an interview for an internship with The Walt Disney Company.

First Lady Michelle Obama is set to give the keynote address at next month’s Veterans Institute workshop at the Walt Disney World Resort.

ABC News Anchor Bob Woodruff to Give a Keynote Address at Disney’s Veterans Institute Workshop

ABC News Anchor Bob Woodruff – who was injured in Iraq in 2006 – will give a keynote address at Disney’s first-ever Veterans Institute workshop next month.
The Veterans Institute workshop is a free event offered by Disney at the Walt Disney World Resort to inspire companies to employ servicemen and women who are transitioning to the private sector.

Walt Disney World Resort to Host Veterans Institute Workshop in November

As part of its ongoing Heroes Work Here initiative to hire, train, and support military veterans, Disney is hosting a free Veterans Institute to inspire other companies to employ servicemen and women who are transitioning to the private sector.
