Characters In Flight Balloon Closes for Inspection in Downtown Disney

This weekend, a familiar sight from Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney disappeared, as the Characters in Flight hot air balloon closed for inspections. The closure comes after a similar balloon in Hong Kong suffered an accident last Thursday.

Paris-based company Aerophile, which operates the attraction, made the decision to remove the hot air balloon until further notice. A similar attraction in Disneyland Paris, also owned by Aerophile, has closed as well.

The accident in Hong Kong occurred after the hot air balloon sprung a leak. The balloon plunged to the ground from a height of more than 60 yards, with guests onboard the balloon and on the ground only suffering minor injuries.

Disney and Aerophile have yet to announce when, or if, the balloon will reopen.
