Brazil's Fredison Costa Wins 2014 Walt Disney World Marathon

Brazilian runner Fredison Costa won the 2014 Walt Disney World Marathon, defeating countryman and 2013 winner Adriano Bastos.

Last year Costa lost the Disney Marathon title to Bastos, but this year’s win makes it the third time in the last four years that Costa has won. This is also the 10th straight Brazilian win.

Bastos – winner of eight previous Disney Marathons – injured his left leg in October 2013 and said the injury slowed his training.

Costa, who called this the “most important race of [his] life,” finished the marathon in 2:21:39. Bastos came in second at 2:22:25, while Alfredo Arevalo of Guatemala came in third at 2:23:19.

In the women’s division, Angela Brito of Ecuador crossed the finish line first at 2:47:44, seven minutes ahead of Brittney Christianson of Minot, ND. Julie Northrup of Jacksonville, FL came in third at 2:59:08.

More than 26,000 runners competed in the Walt Disney World Marathon presented by Cigna. Nearly 7,000 of those runners were participating in the new Dopey Challenge which included running the 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon for a total of 48.6 miles.

Next up on the Walt Disney World runDisney schedule is the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend in February.
