Up and coming pop artist Sean D’Anconia will be debuting his take on Mickey Mouse – Mousetown – at the grand opening of WonderGround Gallery at the Downtown Disney District this June.
D’Anconia joins a select group of artists who will be presenting their take on Disney classics at the grand opening of WonderGround, where opening day will include several tributes to Mickey Mouse as well as Pixar related artwork.
I wanted to see Mickey return to his retro roots but also updated, placing our hero into a stylized film noir setting, something akin to 1974’s ‘Chinatown’ meets Murakami’s ‘1Q84.’ In my tale, Mickey picks up a deck of magical cards belonging to Yen Sid (Fantasia) and is transported to an alternate reality as MOUSETOWN’s detective, where he must solve an incredible mystery to have any hope of returning to his world, while saving this one.
The artist’s East-meets-West inspiration is very evident in his work, as Minnie Mouse is adorned as a Kabuki actress while Mickey wears a Hakama and a large “Rising Mouse” sun appears in the background.
D’Anconia’s painting will be on display June 9 at the WonderGround Gallery. The artist will also be on hand from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. to sign prints and mingle with fans.
