Disney Completes Lucasfilm Acquisition

Last month, Disney and Lucasfilm made the incredibly exciting announcement that Disney would soon be the official owner of Lucasfilm, which includes the legendary Star Wars franchise. On Friday, Disney announced that their acquisition of Lucasfilm is now officially complete.

The acquisition was done based on last Friday’s closing price of Disney stock market shares, which was $50. With that closing price, Disney’s acquisition of the company was valued at $4.06 billion, a slightly higher amount than the original $4 billion estimation that was announced in October.

In a statement, Disney CEO Bob Iger commented:

“We’re thrilled to welcome Lucasfilm to the Disney family. Star Wars is one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time and this transaction combines that world class content with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets, which we believe will generate growth as well as significant long-term value.”

In addition to the Star Wars franchise and other film properties, the acquisition also includes businesses in consumer products, animation, visual effects, audio post production, and cutting-edge technologies through Skywalker Sound, LucasArts, and Industrial Light & Magic, making this a highly substantial addition to the Walt Disney Company. Stay tuned for news about the exciting new announcements and products that are sure to come out of this major deal.
