Disney VoluntEARS Creating Handmade Gifts for Central Florida Hospitals

blanketearsA special group of Disney VoluntEARS are creating handmade items to donate to Central Florida hospitals and other organizations.

The BlanketEARS started up in 2007 when the group would get together once a week to knit caps for soldiers who were overseas. The group is much bigger now and they use their time and talent to create knit, crochet, and sew baby hats, pet mats, quilts, and more.

Each month the BlanketEARS pack up their handmade creations and send them to Central Florida hospitals and community organizations including the Orlando Day Nursery, the Coalition for the Homeless, the Pet Alliance of Great Orlanod, and the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

“The donations bring much warmth and comfort to our young patients and their families,” said Angela Phillips, manager of volunteer services at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. “For the patients to know that there are people in the community who care about others in challenging times is a powerful message for the heart, and thus as powerful as medicine in the overall healing process.”

To date this year the BlanketEARS have created more than 2,800 handmade items for these and other organizations.
