Disney’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” Opens With Dissapointing Numbers

With all of the hype and media efforts Disney pushed for “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” stockholders and movie buffs were expecting an impressive opening weekend, making big bucks for the company. Unfortunately, according to early estimates, Jerry Bruckheimer’s ‘Prince’ turned out to be a frog. Up against the widely anticipated “Sex and the City 2” & “Shrek,” the new “Prince of Persia” film came in 3rd at the box office making approximately $30 million.

“Daily Finance” is reporting that Disney execs were “praying for a powerful one-two punch with Iron Man 2 and Persia. It didn’t happen. Now, shareholders are left with pinning their hopes for one more big hit on Toy Story 3.”

Besides the heavily advertised “Toy Story 3” Disney has a chance to pick things up at the summer box office with “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” featuring Nicholas Cage, in July. Jerry Bruckheimer, who made the “Pirates of the Caribbean” flicks into a wildly popular franchise, was also the director of “Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time” and the upcoming “Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”
