Heat Advisory Greets Runners in Town for Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend

The 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is officially underway!  And whether you are visiting Central Florida from out of town, or you’re a local, you have probably noticed something a little out of the ordinary: daily high temperatures in the eighties.

Because of the warmer-than-normal temperatures, Disney has released the following heat advisory for runners participating in the various races:

Due to warmer weather than anticipated, we encourage all participants to closely monitor their pace and not to over extend. This may not be the weekend for your personal best time.

We encourage you to be well-hydrated prior to the race and maintain fluid status with alternating water and electrolyte based hydration options throughout your race and the entire race weekend.

Slow down and ask for assistance at any and early signs of heat illness. Heed these warnings seriously. Please review the marathon program for more details, and if at any time you require medical assistance, the medical staff can be found wearing green jackets and official black medical staff shirts.

With race weekend more than half through, we are still awaiting the big race on Sunday — the Disney Marathon.  Thus far, children, families, and runners have challenged themselves with a myriad of races.  Some of the events have included Disney’s Health and Fitness Expo, Kids’ Races, a 5k Family Fun Run, as well as the Half Marathon and Marathon. Devoted runners who truly want a challenge can take the Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge, which includes competing in both the half marathon and marathon on consecutive days.

If you’re interested in competing in a runDisney event at Walt Disney World in 2013, the following events have been announced. (Be sure to check listings for the events; some are sold out at this time.)
