runDisney Cancels All Running Events for Saturday, January 7

runDisney has announced that all running events planned for Saturday, January 7, during the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend have been cancelled.
The cancellation was announced as the weather forecast is calling for an ‘elevated risk’ of lightning in the area and the fact that some areas of the race course do not provide access to shelter.
The half marathon and the runDisney Kids’ Races are the two events that are cancelled. The Health & Fitness Expo will not open until 11 a.m. on Saturday morning.

runDisney Announces Inaugural Disney Castaway Cay Challenge

runDisney has announced a new race that coincides with the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend but takes place in the Bahamas.
The inaugural Disney Castaway Cay Challenge takes place in January 2015 and it combines the Castaway Cay 5K with any Walt Disney World Marathon race that has a distance of 5K or longer.
Runners who complete a marathon weekend race and then cruise on the January 12 Disney Dream from Port Canaveral can take part in the second half of the challenge – the Castaway Cay 5K when the ship stops …

Registration Opens for Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend

Registration for the 2014 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend races opened at noon on April 9 and within hours the new Walt Disney World 10K was sold out. The 10K was one of two new events announced for the Marathon Weekend; the second new event is the Dopey Challenge where participants will run the 5K, 10K, half marathon, and full marathon for a total of 48.6 miles.

Heat Advisory Greets Runners in Town for Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend

The 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is officially underway!  And whether you are visiting Central Florida from out of town, or you’re a local, you have probably noticed something a little out of the ordinary: daily high temperatures in the eighties.
Because of the warmer-than-normal temperatures, Disney has released the following heat advisory for runners participating in the various races:
Due to warmer weather than anticipated, we encourage all participants to closely monitor their pace and not to over extend. This may not be the weekend for your personal best time.

Brazil’s Fredison Costa Repeats First Place Finish in Walt Disney World Marathon

It was an exciting finish at this morning’s Walt Disney World Marathon, in which Brazil’s Fredison Costa narrowly edged out his fellow Brazilian, Adriano Bastos, to win the race for the second consecutive year.
Bastos was favored to finish the event first, but came in second to Costa by a sliver of 14 seconds.  Bastos has enjoyed the title of champion seven times in previous years.  Costa’s winning time was 2:19:01, while the field’s leading female finisher, Renee High of Virginia Beach, Virginia, turned in a time of 2:48:33.

Walt Disney World Marathon Already Sold Out

If you were planning to run the Walt Disney World Marathon weekend race on January 5-8, 2012, we hope you registered ahead of time – all of the races for the marathon weekend are completely sold out.
The races typically draw thousands of people to Central Florida to participate, and this year will be no exception. The weekend races are just one of several races runDisney holds throughout the year. In fact, just last week they announced a new race for 2012 – The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend.

Today Show Represented Well at Disney’s Marathon Weekend

As we brought to you yesterday, Natalie Morales, Al Roker, and Meredith Vieira of NBC’s “Today” Show competed in Disney’s Half Marathon yesterday morning.  Here, the smiling trio are shown at the start of the race with some Disney friends.
All totaled, approximately 54,000 runners took place in the Disney Marathon events, which included various family races, a health expo, a 5k, a half marathon, and a full marathon.  In addition, this year’s half marathon included a special tribute to our troops, for which more than 400 military personnel in Iraq …
