Walt Disney World Donates Unclaimed Cell Phones to Local Charities

Several Central Florida theme parks, including Walt Disney World, are donating unclaimed electronic devices to local charities to help fund their ongoing efforts.

One such charity that benefits from Disney World’s donations is Harbor House of Central Florida, who sell the donated smartphones on eBay and Craigslist. According to CEO Carol Wick, the donations have generated about $50,000 annually for the women’s shelter.

The funds generated from the donated phones are used to provide food, medication and other items for residents of Harbor House. Older models are given to the women in case they run into an emergency and need to call 911.

Disney does give owners 90 days to collect their items from the lost and found. If devices remain unclaimed after the 90 day period, Disney wipes the memory and donates the unclaimed devices to local charities. In addition to Harbor House, Disney also donates devices to Goodwill, Salvation Army, Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida and United Way.
