New Annie Leibovitz Disney Portraits feature Johnny Depp and Patti Smith

The latest portraits from Annie Leibovitz’s Disney Dream Portrait Series for Disney Parks feature Johnny Depp as his famous big-screen persona, Captain Jack Sparrow – a first in this collection! Patti Smith, performer, writer and artist, and personal friend of Depp’s, also appears in one portrait as the Second Pirate in Command.

The two-part layout will appear as a special insert in the May editions of O- The Oprah Magazine, Real Simple, People and InStyle and are simply breathtaking. The captions for both portraits reads: “Where magic sets sail and adventures become legendary.”

These portraits are a must-see for any Pirates of the Caribbean fan, and beautifully capture the essence of Disney magic. Which is your favorite?

  • I don’t understand the Leibovitz-Disney connection. Time and time again she is hired to take highly produced photos which turn out very nice. But what purpose do they really serve? When park employees are striking because they feel they are being treated unfairly – it seems odd that Disney will gladly pay (which I’m sure is an incredibly high fee) Leibovitz for her time and talents. These pirate photos for instance – are they really bringing in more people to the theater to see the film?
I wish I had her gig.

  • Thank you for your comment. I honestly can’t say whether these portraits will work to bring more people in to see the film, but they’re still quite beautiful in their own right. As for the purpose of her Disney portrait series, I honestly can’t answer that definitively, but my guess is it’s just an ad campaign to perhaps get more people interested in all things Disney.
