Disney's 'Aladdin' Musical Gets Official Broadway Opening Date

This week brought some exciting news regarding the upcoming debut of Disney's Aladdin musical on Broadway, as it was revealed that the show will officially open at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theater on March 20, 2014.

The musical will transfer to Broadway following its pre-Broadway tryout this winter at Toronto's Mirvish Theater, where it runs from November 1 through January 5, 2014. The show will then begin previews on Broadway on February 26, 2014 prior to its official opening date.

This new stage production of Aladdin will expand on the beloved 1992 film, with many of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's early ideas and songs that didn't make it into the film included in the new adaptation. While an adaptation of Aladdin originally debuted in 2011 at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater, the Broadway production will feature some significant changes, including all-new design elements and a new script. The stage production will feature music by Menken, with lyrics by Ashman, Tim Rice, and Chad Beguelin, who has also written the musical's book. Casey Nicholaw (The Book of MormonThe Drowsy Chaperone) will direct. No casting has yet been announced.
