Downtown Disney to Officially Be Renamed Disney Springs on September 29

disney springsAfter months of waiting, Downtown Disney will officially be known as Disney Springs next week.

A renaming ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29 at Waterview Park at 5 p.m.

The official renaming will take place just one day before the grand opening of Morimoto Asia, a pan-Asian restaurant owned by Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto.

Signs surrounding Downtown Disney have been updated recently with the new moniker, as have signs on Interstate 4.

The backstory for Disney Springs is that it is an early 20th century Florida town that was built around the natural springs. Many of the new restaurants and bars are located in an area called The Landing – which is located in the former home of Downtown Disney’s Pleasure Island.

The transformation of Downtown Disney to Disney Springs won’t be completed with the name change. More retail shops and restaurants are planned in addition to two parking garages. The entire area is expected to be completed in 2016.
