New ‘Lion King’ Exhibit On Display in New York City Through December 16

If you’ve seen a production of The Lion King on stage, you’ve likely been impressed by the awe-inspiring design of the show, from the hand-crafted masks and puppets to the gorgeous set design. Now, Disney has given Disney and theatre fans the chance to see these amazing designs closer than ever before to celebrate The Lion King‘s 15th anniversary on Broadway. From now through December 16th, guests can visit a special pop-up exhibit that celebrates Julie Taymor’s stunning designs for the stage production of The Lion King.

Disney Theatricals Cancels Broadway Performances Due to Hurricane Sandy

Those of us on the East Coast are gearing up for Hurricane Sandy and its effects over the next few days, and in preparation for the storm, Disney Theatrical Productions has canceled several performances of its Broadway productions.
The October 28-29 performances of Newsies, Mary Poppins, and The Lion King will be officially canceled, Disney Theatricals announced this afternoon. The dates/times of the canceled performances are as follows:
Mary Poppins: October 28th at 6:30 PM (New Amsterdam Theater)
The Lion King: October 28th at 6:30 PM (Minskoff Theater)
Newsies: October 29th at 7:30 PM …

Disney Debuts ‘Extra Credit’ Magazine for Students and Educators

Sources have revealed that the Disney Youth Programs team have debuted the first issue of Disney Extra Credit magazine, a publication aimed at educators and students in the performing arts.
The first issue of this new magazine has compiled information from Disney Youth Programs and Disney Performing Arts to offer behind-the-scenes looks into the world of Disney entertainment. The premiere issue features information about becoming a Disney Cruse Line dancer, as well as interviews with Disney Theatrical Production stars and information about where Disney Performing Arts alumni have gone.

‘Newsies’ Broadway Run is Now Open-Ended

Ever since Newsies made its debut on Broadway in March, the show has become a complete success, earning eight Tony nominations and becoming a box office smash. While the musical’s run was initially expected to end on August 19, the success of Newsies has prompted Disney Theatrical Productions to give the show an open ended run, with no closing date in sight.

‘The Lion King’ Becomes Highest-Grossing Broadway Show in History

Although The Phantom of the Opera still reins as the longest-running show in Broadway history, The Lion King took an important honor from the popular show this week. On Monday, it was announced that the show has surpassed Phantom to become the highest-grossing show in Broadway history.
The Lion King earned this honor with a total cumulative gross of $853,846,062, as compared to Phantom‘s previously record-holding gross of $853,122,847. While Phantom has been running on Broadway for ten years longer than The Lion King–the former opened in 1988, while Lion King opened in …

Rob Ashford to Direct Musical Adaptation of ‘Alice in Wonderland’

This week, it was announced that Broadway director and choreographer Rob Ashford will be teaming up with Disney Theatrical Productions to bring a musical adaptation of  Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland to the stage. The new musical, which does not yet have a premiere date, will be based on Disney’s 2010 Alice in Wonderland film, rather than the original Lewis Carroll stories and Disney’s 1951 animated film of the same name.

‘The Lion King’ Becomes Sixth Longest-Running Broadway Musical

This week, the Broadway production of The Lion King celebrated a major milestone. On March 14 at 2:00 PM, The Lion King played its 5,960th performance and officially became the sixth longest-running Broadway musical of all time.
The show  surpassed Oh, Calcutta!, which previously held the record with 5,959 performances. The Lion King currently stars Adam Jacobs, Chaunteé Schuler, Alton Fitzgerald White, Patrick R. Brown, and Tshidi Manye.

Casting Announced for Broadway Run of ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’

‘The Lion King’ Musical to Launch UK National Tour

For the past 13 years, Disney’s The Lion King has delighted theatre audiences on London’s West End. Now, Disney Theatrical Productions will bring the long-running show to audiences all around the UK, as it was announced that a separate UK national tour is set to begin this August.
The national tour will begin performances August 31, 2012 at the Bristol Hippodrome, with an official opening date of September 6. The show will play an 11-week run there before transferring to Manchester’s Palace Theatre, where it will play from December 1-March 31, …

Full Cast Announced for Broadway Run of ‘Newsies’

We’re just a few short months from the Broadway opening of Newsies, and recently, Disney Theatrical Productions announced the full cast of talented performers that will be seen in the show. Many of the cast will be reprising their roles, after originally performing them in the show’s premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse last fall.
