‘Newsies’ Celebrates One Year on Broadway

This week brought another big milestone for Disney on Broadway and its hit show Newsies, which celebrated its one year anniversary yesterday, March 29.
Newsies, which features music by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, a book by Harvey Fierstein, and direction by Jeff Calhoun, officially opened on Broadway March 29, 2012. ‘Newsies’ on Broadway Recoups Initial Investment

Since it opened on Broadway this past spring, Newsies has proved to be one of Broadway’s most popular shows. The musical’s popularity paid off this week, when it was announced that the show has completely recouped its investment.
Newsies opened this past March on Broadway, following a prior run at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. This means that the show was able to recoup its entire $5 million investment in just nine months, marking the fastest a Disney production has ever been able to turn a profit.

Video: ‘Newsies’ Cast Gets Ready for 2012 Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade

We’re just a few weeks away from the annual Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade, which airs each year on Christmas morning. This year, among the parade’s performances will be the cast of Newsies on Broadway, who will take to Main Street U.S.A. in Walt Disney World to perform the show’s opening number, “Carrying the Banner.”

‘Muppets,’ ‘Brave,’ and ‘Newsies’ Nominated for Grammy Awards

This week brought the announcement of the nominees for this year’s Grammy Awards. Among the nominees were several Disney songs and albums, featuring music from Newsies, The Muppets, and more.
The Broadway cast recording of Newsies earned a nomination for Best Musical Theater Album. The hit Broadway show features music by Jack Feldman and Alan Menken, who has previously won five Grammy Awards for his work on such Disney films as Tangled, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast.

Disney Theatricals Cancels Broadway Performances Due to Hurricane Sandy

Those of us on the East Coast are gearing up for Hurricane Sandy and its effects over the next few days, and in preparation for the storm, Disney Theatrical Productions has canceled several performances of its Broadway productions.
The October 28-29 performances of Newsies, Mary Poppins, and The Lion King will be officially canceled, Disney Theatricals announced this afternoon. The dates/times of the canceled performances are as follows:
Mary Poppins: October 28th at 6:30 PM (New Amsterdam Theater)
The Lion King: October 28th at 6:30 PM (Minskoff Theater)

‘Newsies’ Broadway Run is Now Open-Ended

Ever since Newsies made its debut on Broadway in March, the show has become a complete success, earning eight Tony nominations and becoming a box office smash. ‘Newsies’ Extends Broadway Run Prior to Opening

While Newsies doesn’t officially open on Broadway until March 29, the show’s future on the Great White Way already looks pretty bright. The show, which began performances at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on March 15, has already announced that the show’s limited run will be extended through August 19, 2012.
Following its world premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse last fall, Newsies was originally scheduled for a strictly limited 101-performance run through June 10. The show, which stars Jeremy Jordan as Jack Kelly, is inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899. …
