Teddy Newton and Lee Unkrich will be participating in panel discussions sponsored by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences.
On Tuesday, February 22, Newton, director of the Disney Pixar short “Day & Night,” will participate in Oscar’s Annual celebration, Shorts! The event, which includes a screening of both the live action and animated short films nominated for this year’s Oscars, will also feature a discussion by many of the films’ directors.

Just over a month ago, we told you that the Chilean miners, whose story inspired millions in 2010, would be visiting the Walt Disney World Resort in January. Since last week, the men, their rescuers, and their families have been enjoying the sights, sounds, tastes, and thrills of the Happiest Place on Earth. Today, they received heroes’ welcomes and were honored with a special parade and celebration on Main Street U.S.A., where Main Street’s Mayor proclaimed this to be their special day.

ABC’s hit comedy “Modern Family” took home the Screen Actor’s Guild award Sunday evening for Best Ensemble in a Comedy TV Series.
The win marked an otherwise unremarkable evening for ABC and parent company, Disney. Disney films were not represented in any of the film categories, but “Modern Family” did garner four nominations. Honolulu firefighters were called to the scene of a small fire at Disney’s Aulani Resort on Thursday. The two-alarm fire caused approximately $20,000 damage in one of the towers of the resort, which is currently under construction and is set to open later this year.
Construction workers began fighting the fire with extinguishers. The fire was reported at 6:13 p.m., and was said to be extinguished by 6:39 p.m.
The cause of the fire to is still unknown, and is being investigated.

2010 was a good year to be Bob Iger.
The Walt Disney Company Chief Executive saw an increase in pay in 2010 of 35%, jumping to $16.3 million from $12 million the year before, bringing his total compensation to $28 million. The increase by the board of directors’ compensation committee was in recognition of Iger’s “exceptional performance” during a year otherwise marked by a slow economy.
The committee pointed specifically to the success of three of Disney’s cable channels, Disney Channel, ESPN, and ABC Family, as they delivered record ratings. Also noted …

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Disney has unveiled a few more details regarding the upcoming Fantasyland roller coaster, The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. And according to senior vice president for creative development Eric Jacobson, you probably won’t be left shaking in your boots. “We’re thinking of this as somewhere between Barnstormer and Big Thunder,” he said.

Guests of Disney’s California Adventure will have an opportunity to view some upcoming magic, as Walt Disney Imagineering Blue Sky Cellar opened a new exhibit today.
Fans will get a first chance glance at “The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure,” the next significant attraction slated for opening at the newly renovated park. In addition to new models and concept drawings, guests can see:
an artist’s rendering of the hand-painted mural that will cover the wall adjacent to the loading area, which will be 86-feet long;

The latest lineup for Epcot’s Flower Power Concert Series has been announced. The special mucical event, which takes place on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival, features musical acts from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Demi Lovato has reportedly left the rehab center, where she’s been undergoing treatment for “emotional and physical issues.”
According to Reuters, a source close to the teen singer and actress left the facility earlier this week for Los Angeles, where she has been focusing on returning to her normal routine.
